Originally introduced in the Spring & Summer 1997 collection and showcased on the 1998 runway during the subsequent spring and summer collection, Lang's painter denim stands as one of the most iconic jeans in the history of designer menswear. This rare grey variant emerged in the Autumn & Winter 2000 release, gaining visibility on the cover of New Order's 2001 album 'Get Ready,' art directed by Peter Saville and worn by actress Nicolette Krebitz. The iconic grey pair experienced a resurgence in popularity among archive enthusiasts when Kanye West was photographed wearing them on multiple occasions in 2017, captured by Los Angeles paparazzi. Jeans have also been seen on Designer Alexander McQueen, and superstar Lady Gaga.

Helmut Lang was born in Austria in 1956, and began designing in his hometown Vienna in 1977 despite lacking formal training. He first showed in Paris in 1986, which is also when he founded his label. Lang is known for his minimalist, deconstructivist, and often severe designs. His fashion house became famous for its simple but refined designs, its slim suits in black or white, its denim collection, and the use of high-tech fabrics.
