Dior AW06 “These Grey Days” Satin Cummerbund Jeans
Dior Homme’s fall 2006 collection, “These Grey Days,” represented a swift pivot from Hedi Slimane’s preceding work. The title itself suggests a feeling of ennui, and the work backs the notion that Slimane was growing exhausted with playing the part of the ready-to-wear dynamo he’d become. Dior Homme had wandered far from his couture roots, and “These Grey Days” suggested a return to them, with emphasis put on the silhouettes — a particular strength of Slimane’s which had been rendered null by the repetitiveness of the ultra-slim Dior look. The fabrics too harkened back to the made-to-order realm of couture, with heavy furs and hand-done touches such as pearl buttons, beaded jackets, and woven leather piping. Slimane remarked that he leaned heavier than usual on the talents of his atelier’s employees, and such detailing made the statement emphatically evident. The clothes were not that of the rakish Dior boy, but rather focused on sartorial tailoring, and looked moreso like the work of Slimane’s one-time mentor Yves Saint Laurent. The waist coats, boleros and intricately wrapped bow tie blouses reminded all that Slimane the designer could still separate himself from Slimane the institution and marketing powerhouse.
