Ann Verhelst was born in Kortrijk in 1959, Ann made the decision to change her last name from "Verhelst" to "Demeulemeester" without public reasoning. She had attended art school for three years before heading to Antwerp to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 78 to 81 and is known as one of the original “Antwerp Six” members a radical group of Belgian Avant-Garde designers. In 1985 she produced her own label with the help of her devoted husband who left his career as a photographer behind to be an unofficial “shadow” director. By 96 she began producing menswear and by 99 her first store opened in Antwerp. In 2013 she announced her departure of the brand and chose Margiela’s previous creative director Sébastien Meunier as her new visionary
